Thanks to your votes, Brooklyn Public Library will receive $250,000 from Partners in Preservation for restoration of our Central Library front doors. Read on to learn what we’re doing with the funding…
How will you use the $250,000 restoration grant?
We will replace the original 1937 main entry doors at Central Library, using historically sensitive materials and methods. The bronze and glass doors, including two sets of double doors and a central revolving door with four leaves, provide the base for the 50’ x 20’ entrance to our landmarked building.
What will the new doors look like?
The new doors will be an exact replica of the originals, which, after more than 70 years of heavy usage, have deteriorated beyond the repair. All visible parts will have a bronze finish similar to the original, while existing door pulls and hardware will be refurbished and reused where possible.
Can I still get into Central Library during the restoration?
While the doors are being restored, you can access the building through the Youth Wing and Dweck Center entrances on Eastern Parkway. Look out for the signs.
When is all this happening?
Installation is slated to begin in early November and should take six weeks for completion, followed by two weeks for testing and compliance. The entire project is expected to be completed by December 31, 2012.
What is the Partners in Preservation (PiP) program?
PiP is a program in which American Express, in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, awards preservation grants to historic places across the country. Since 2006, $9.5 million has been awarded to preservation projects in seven cities across the U.S. PiP aims to increase the public’s awareness of the importance of historic preservation in the United States and to preserve America’s historic and cultural places, including sites at the heart of your community.
